There are varying levels of magnesium absorption into the body depending on the source of the magnesium being consumed. It does not matter how much magnesium you consume, what really matters is what is absorbed by the body. Therefore, it’s important to consider your source.

Magnesium oxide is often used as a source [of magnesium] in supplements as it is inexpensive, however, it is very poorly absorbed. Magnesium citrate, magnesium glycinate and magnesium chloride are far more favourable as they are absorbed and tolerated well. Ensure you are making accurate comparisons, as simply comparing total magnesium content might be misleading. There are other forms of magnesium that are less common but also provide benefit.   

Magnesium is absorbed through foods we consume; this digestive process provides a natural and sustained release process. Often supplements provide a large once-off dose which is taken rapidly. This may not offer optimal results. A more sustained release would mimic the natural up-take of magnesium by the body. If your product does not offer this, taking smaller doses more frequently with meals may provide better results.
